1. Why is it mandatory to wear shapewear after liposuction?
Shapewear, also known as compression garments, is typically worn immediately after surgery. Some inquisitive patients might ask, “Can I wait until the swelling fluid has drained before wearing the compression garment?” This is not allowed; it must be worn immediately after the procedure. Here are three reasons why post-operative wear is mandatory:
① Compression to stop bleeding and reduce edema.
Although liposuction incisions are small, the internal wound surface is quite large. Wearing shapewear compresses peripheral blood vessels, closes cavities, and reduces bleeding. Appropriate pressure minimizes the retention of blood and fluids in localized areas, preventing hematomas and edema.
② Secure the skin.
After liposuction, especially with large-volume liposuction, the skin will experience varying degrees of looseness in the short term. Shapewear acts against gravity, securing the skin in the appropriate position and preventing sagging.
③ Body sculpting (Shaping).
Continuous and even pressure has a sculpting effect on the skin and subcutaneous fat, making the suctioned areas smoother and ensuring fluid body contours.
2. How to choose shapewear after liposuction?
It is essential to wear suitable shapewear after liposuction surgery. If you don’t know what kind of shapewear to buy after your procedure, save this post and use it as a shopping guide.
Face and Neck:
If you are undergoing liposuction on the double chin area (as shown in Figure A), a chin strap is sufficient (as shown in Figure B). If the procedure involves the cheeks and zygomatic arch (cheekbone area), a zygomatic arch support garment is needed. If the neck is included, a jaw and neck strap is required (as shown in Figure C).

Upper Arms:
Try to avoid sleeve-type shapewear, as they are prone to sliding and shifting. The shapewear should extend past the elbow and shoulder joints, such as a shoulder-chest garment.

Back: Selecting a suitable bra is sufficient.
Waist and Abdomen: You should choose shapewear that has shoulder straps and a crotch design to prevent the garment from shifting and to avoid interfering with using the restroom. It is best to choose a style with multiple rows of hooks so that the compression can be adjusted according to your recovery progress.

Thighs: For early post-operative shapewear, it is best to choose a design with zippers, including a crotch zipper. This ensures it doesn’t interfere with using the restroom while also making it convenient for early dressing changes and putting on/taking off. The fit of the inner thigh near the crotch must be secure; otherwise, bulging may occur on the inner side.

3. How long should shapewear be worn?
It is generally recommended to wear shapewear for about 3 months. However, this is not absolute; it depends on skin elasticity. The looser the skin and the larger the liposuction area, the longer the required wearing time. The daily wearing duration varies across different stages, which can be mainly divided into three phases (those preparing for liposuction might want to save this section for future use):
① One week after liposuction: As this is the acute edema phase, to avoid bleeding and swelling, it is recommended to wear it 24 hours a day.
② Within one month after liposuction: This is the chronic edema phase. You can wear it all day or for the majority of the day. 48 hours after stitches are removed, you can shower/bathe. You may temporarily take it off after bathing to avoid skin damage caused by prolonged wear.
③ One month after liposuction: Depending on the body area and activity level, you can choose to wear it for 12 hours during the day or at night. Of course, if skin elasticity is poor, the wearing time should be extended.
4. Is tighter shapewear better?
Many beauty seekers prioritize smaller and tighter sizes when buying shapewear. Aside from the risk of not being able to put it on post-surgery, this concept is actually unreasonable. Whether in the early or late stages of recovery, the pressure of the shapewear must be appropriate. Excessive tightness can lead to vascular and lymphatic reflux obstruction, causing physical discomfort, which in turn worsens edema and prolongs the recovery period. In limb areas, especially the lower limbs, it can even lead to phlebitis or venous thrombosis.
Conversely, pressure that is too low will not serve its purpose, potentially leading to severe edema, hematomas, and seromas in the early post-operative period. Do not stick to one size throughout the entire recovery. Every 2 to 3 weeks, the pressure of the shapewear needs to be adjusted based on recovery progress, and the garment should be replaced if necessary.
5. Can I take off the shapewear at night?
This depends on the specific post-operative time period, after all, the skin also needs to breathe. Within the first week after surgery, it should be worn 24 hours a day. Within the first month after surgery, try to wear it as much as possible, but allow for short breaks daily. More than one month after surgery, you can choose not to wear it at night.
6. Is it necessary to have first-stage and second-stage shapewear after liposuction?
Yes, it is necessary. There are differences between the first and second stages of post-liposuction shapewear, and their effects vary. The primary function of the first stage is repair; the fabric is thicker and the pressure is higher. The second stage focuses mainly on shaping; the pressure is lower, and adjustments are made to fabric thickness and comfort. The timing of the switch depends on the specific recovery situation, and you can consult the medical staff’s opinion during follow-up visits.
